A Festival of Colours in Year Three!

This week year three have been focusing on the Hindu festival of Holi. The children have learnt about the story of Prahlad and the battle of good vs evil.

To show off our learning, we spent the day making Holi masks, our own Rangoli designs and then used pastels to create good vs evil colour collages. Watch the video below to see some pictures of the day's various activities.

The children all thoroughly enjoyed the day and were extremely creative with their masks. A big thank you to all of the parents who came into lower school to have a look at the children's work. I know they all really appreciated it.

Lights,camera....script

Excitement and speculation of who will be in with the chance of winning a much prized Oscar this year will soon be all over the newspapers and internet. However the film and TV industry wouldn't exist without the skills and imagination of people who can translate great characters and plot lines to the screen. Not often in the spotlight, it is the script writer who makes the first steps on that creative journey. Some year 6 pupils had the exciting opportunity of spending a day working with the reknown script writer, Nazrin Choudhury. She has won many awards for her script writing and although her name may be unfamiliar to you, she has written episodes of many TV hits such as Waterloo Road, Eastenders, Coronation Street and Doctors.

Nazrin began the day by sharing the writing format used by scriptwriters and comparing it to the final film version. Throughout the busy day, Nazrin guided everyone through the process of devising interesting characters and then linking them together to form an exciting plotline. Scripts were then written to an incredibly tight deadline (just like in the real world).

Everyone had great fun performing selected scenes from their stories remembering to include stage directions for not only the actors but props and technical members of the film crew. Well done to Alex, Lauren, Reece and Liam who were great members of their script teams. A big thank you to Mr May for transporting the children back to school at the end of this exciting day.

Picture perfect!

Have you ever puzzled over the purpose of all those dials and symbols on your camera? Well, some Year 5 pupils attended a Rushmoreable workshop where they learnt all about shutter speeds, F stops and depths of field.

Under the expert guidance of Debbie, a professional photographer, pupils used their new understanding of a camera to shoot illustrations for a picture book. Paying close attention to the story entitled, Generosity, plasticine figures were modelled and placed on a backdrop. Every scene was then photographed very carefully to produce a portfolio of pictures that will be incorporated in an infant storybook. The workshop was a real insight into the technical and very creative side of photography.

The Friday Blog

Year 6 pupils have been working hard on their authentic Ancient Greek vases to show the story of Theseus and the Minotaur. So far we've been researching different types of vase and have even begun papier mache-ing our own!

Year 5 have started the most spectacular event of the year...swimming! Every Tuesday pupils from Year 5 go to swim at Aldershot Pools. We interviewed a Year 5 pupil who said that it is awesome! Years 3 and 4...start looking forward to it!

Year 4 have been busy making soup and were even able to take some home! With the help of some very skilled teachers (and assistants!) they created Leek and Potato soup. We're sure they tasted great!

Some of the Year 6 boys recently told us in assembly that they would be relaunching the lunchtime games and that if people come regularly throughout the week, they may even be able to play with the parachute on a Friday. It's starting this week so be prepared for some fun!

The first handwriting awards were given today. You can win this by having neat handwriting not just in your handwriting books but in all books - even maths! This week the awards went to Shemikah and Billie (both in Year 6). In addition to a certificate they also got to choose a fabulous pen.

Teampoints were close this week. In fourth place were the green team (291 points), third place went to yellow team (296 points), second place were the red team (433 points) but in first place with an amazing 437 points were the blue team! Congratulations!

Well done to the boys who played in the football tournament this week - Archie, Chris, George, Bradley, George and Nathan - you did a great job!

On Tuesday 6C did their class assembly on Ancient Greece. Lucy led the show brilliantly and the two songs were both sung beautifully by the whole of 6C. We even had an appearance from the cast of Grease. A mixture of everything!

On Tuesday morning 6C put on a spectacular show with their take on the Ancient Greeks. Lucy, Shemikah and Ashma were excellent narrators who gave us all an insight into what the Ancient Greeks were like and how they lived. Also to take centre stage were Homer played by Kieron; Zeus and his wife Hera (Ryan and Nina) and a bit of Grease mania from Shannon and Alex. A big thank you to superb turn out of parents, it was great to see you all.

Magnificent Materials in Year 3

Happy new year and welcome back to Newport!

In year three, our topic for this half term is 'Can We Fix It?'. This is a really exciting topic in which the children will become scientists to investigate the properties of various materials as well as rocks and soils. The children will then be asked to redesign the school's linkway using what they have learnt from their science lessons.

This week the children have been investigating the different materials of properties around school and have planned and carried out a test on kitchen roll for absorbency. Everyone really concentrated on making sure our tests were fair and, as a result, we found out that 'Thirst Pockets' were best for absorbing spilt liquid.

Welcome back Newport!

WELCOME BACK NEWPORT!

Newport's back with a big bang full of new topics, new clubs and lots more. What more could you want? In each year there is a different topic to be enjoyed. Year 6 are looking at the Ancient Greeks, Year 5 are Hanging On to their Heads, Year 4 know It's Cold Out There and Year 3 are Investigating Materials!

During the first assembly of the term, the Curriculum Council and Mrs Ewing announced that there is going to be a new award for handwriting. This includes keeping to the same style, joining letters and making sure all our work is beautifully presented. Do you think you could win? The reward is a certificate and a beautiful handwriting pen. It comes in lots of styles so make sure you get your favourite!

On Thursday Mr Edmunds showed us how one old stamp could change someone's life. Lots of us learnt from it. It makes us remember the things we sometimes take for granted - beds, food shelter and more.

Roll up ,roll up..... all the fun of the fair!

With Christmas just around the corner, Year six are sadly coming to the end of their fairground design and technology topic. Knowing this, Connaught School kindly invited Newport pupils to participate in a fairground themed activity morning.

Drilling, sanding and measuring skills were much in evidence as the pupils constructed a mini coconut shy in the well equipped technology suite.Professional publishing software was used to design the stall banner. Experts, in the form of ex Newport pupils, from Years 7 -9 were very helpful and welcoming.
The busy morning ended with a PE lesson, again with a fun fair theme. A roundabout of activities saw the pupils showcasing their throwing,running and jumping skills in timed events in the spacious sports hall. Overall, the highest scoring teams were Leran & Christina from 6M and the amazing Josh W from 6C.
Many thanks go to all the Connaught staff especially Mrs Land and Mr Goss and all our former pupils. We hope our Year 6 families will have lots of fun with their fairground models during the forthcoming holidays.

Marvellous map work!

In Year 4, we have been learning about Nepal. As well as learning about the culture and religious festivals of Nepal, the children have designed and made a map of Nepal. Firstly, they cut up some wood and stuck this together to make a frame for their maps. After this, the children designed their maps by drawing the outline of Nepal and adding on different places of interest. Finally, the children used paper mache and mod-roc to make their maps 3D and then painted them using poster paint.

The children enjoyed making their maps and they also learned a valuable lesson in how to clear up a magnificent mess!

Racing Robots

Newport Juniors hosted another exciting Rushmoreable schools workshop this week based around the Lego Mindstorm robots that pupils had experienced during the BAE Systems roadshow. Working together Mrs Fieldgate and Mrs Giblen from Wavell, set the challenge of pupils making and programming their own robots. Year 7 Wavell pupils acted as mentors throughout this day long workshop. Their advice and support was much appreciated by all the teams from the six schools attending. Pupils experienced the "highs and lows "of working with technology; some groups deciding to completely redesign their robots having assessed their suitability for the challenges, others delighted in modifying their programmes to allow their robots to negotiate their way around the tricky courses. Everyone had great fun working together and learning new programming skills with a variety of sensors. The day ended with a robot sports day- competition between the teams was fierce but friendly however the results are listed below:

She shoots, she scores!!!

Yesterday, children from years 5 and 6 took part in a hockey tournament at Aldershot and Farnham Hockey Club. Despite the cold weather the boys and girls ended up drawing 3 nail-biting matches and loosing one. A great save from Alex Williams and a tremendous goal from Joanna kept both parents (and Miss Cooke) in high spirits. A special well done to Kai Walters who was the only year 5 on the team. A fantastic effort from all the children. I am really looking forward to our next tournament! Once again a big thank you to all of the parents who provided transport and cheered all the children on.

Hunting for habitats!

This week, Year 4 have been learning about animals and their habitats. As part of our investigation, the children created 2 contrasting habitats for a woodlouse and observed which environment the woodlouse settled in.

The children had a great time finding the woodlice, creating different environments and observing the woodlouse's journey!

On our travels, we also made a surprising discovery as you can see in the picture!

Girls are spot on once again!

On Tuesday 8th November, the girls played the next round of the Hampshire Cup against Oakley in Basingstoke.
On a damp pitch and with only 7 players, the girls put on a fantastic performance filled with character and determination and moments of real quality. The hosts started well and were 2-0 up at half-time but we were not being outplayed and Joanna was a constant threat throughout. Mimi scored a great goal from all of 30 yards and Joanna bagged a well deserved brace to make the score at the end of normal time, 3-3!
Due to the light, both sides agreed to go straight to penalties and Billie did her bit in goal by scoring hers and making Oakley miss 2 of their penalties. Ellen and Mimi also both scored and it was left to Molly Smith to convert the winning penalty.
A special mentuion to the Yr6 girls who really took the Yr5's under their wing and all led from the front in their performances and well done to the Yr5's who didn't give up and gave their all once again!
Another superb result for the girls who have done themselves proud once again, making it a Newport double over Oakley and move intot he next round!

Year 3 Phonics in Action

The purpose of these is to support the children in their understanding of the many different sounds in the english language. Newport sunk at CK

Newprt boys were sunk 5-0 on Friday night by a very experienced CK team.
The scoreline doesn't reflect how well they played as a team. Reece, our captain and most experienced player was injured just before half time and CK took the lead just after.
In the second half, the boys lost their defensive organisation and composure and conceded 2 quick goals. However Louie was on great form and stopped many more CK efforts.
Ryan was made captain and he inspired the others with some great tackles and blocks - including one in the face! With the team having conceded two more goals both teams were really tired. Kai and Josh both went agonisingly close to scoring which would have been just reward for their efforts.
Rupesh had a great debut after a tentative start and showed some great control and passes whilst Brook made some great blocks and interceptions when he came on in the second half.
The boys should feel proud of themselves, as they NEVER GAVE UP and were unlucky not to score.

Budget & Target Success at Building Challenge.

A group of year 6 pupils travelled to Westfields Junior school in Yateley to compete in a tough building challenge. Newport pupils, as shown by the pictures, proved to be excellent team players working quickly and carefully to plan their complex structure made from a wide range of different coloured bricks.

Only Meila and Liam, in their roles as project manager and site engineer were able to view the architect's model for only 30 seconds at a time! The rest of the team had the tough task of turning their plans to a model building. As with real life construction projects, tough penalties were imposed for extra trips to the architect's office and over/mis ordering the wrong bricks.

By using the skill of checking their balance sheets carefully throughout the task(just like we do with maths problems back in class), the team was complimented by the judge, Jane Sheridan of First Partnership, for having the lowest budget build however the team just missed out on a prize as it was a couple of bricks away from the architect's original.

Well done to Newport's brilliant builders: Liam, Meila, Mitchell, Leran, George and spokesman , Dominic.

BAE Systems/RAF Biomimicry Roadshow

Newport Junior pupils in Years 4-6 had a very special visitor who helped them learn more about biomimicry. Brains, a larger than average, robot was the guest star in the BAE systems/RAF engineering workshop. The "fact packed" fun show educated its audience of both pupils and staff in the fact that engineers use nature to help them develop new products that help us live in the modern world.
Most people are aware how incredibly strong spider web silk is however it can also reflect UV light. A fact that has been used to produce glass with a spider silk like material embedded into it that prevents birds crashing into the windows of tall sky scrapers.
Dolphins are able to detect a Tsunami before it can cause tremendous devastation , as witnessed on the coast of Japan earlier in the year. Engineers are researching how the dolphins do this and hope to copy it to provide an early warning device. Even the humble mussel has been found to produce a non toxic waterproof glue that has been copied by scientists and is safe to use in a whole variety of situations that need ecofriendly but effective sticky glue.
Year 6 pupils went on to participate in a creative nature workhop and a Lego mindstorms robot challenge. Guiding the little robots round a tricky track laid out on the floor required great team work and programming skills.
The afternoon ended all too soon but we hope Brains will soon come back to visit us again next year.

A delightful Diwali day (well...afternoon anyway!)

On Tuesday 1st November, Year 4 clebrated the Hindu festival of Diwali. This 5 day festival is the most famous in the Hindu calendar and is known as the festival of light. During Diwali Hindus also celebrate the new year on the 4th day.

In Year 4, to celebrate Diwali we made diya lanterns, designed rangoli patterns and created a raita dip.

A Visit from the Armed Forces

Before half term, as part of our learning about teeth, three dentists from the armed forces came t0 visit year three. They talked to us about the different teeth, how to brush them properly and what we could do to keep them healthy. The children were even given a pack which included a toothbrush, dentist mirror and disclosing tablets.... expect lots of pink/blue tongues at home.

The children all really enjoyed it and learned lots of different facts about teeth.

Aeronautical engineering; The Bulldog Dart

Year 5 were following instructions this week.

Getting tied up in knots was only the beginning as the pupils were asked to make paper planes by following instructions. Ryan and Zac showed everyone how to tie reef knots.

It was very apparent that Michael was the most accomplished paper plane engineer when he made a Bulldog Dart and Harrier in no time at all.

The children completed the week by working in pairs to tackle an assault course created by Miss Crompton in the hall .

Year 6 River Dance

On thursday afternoon 6C performed their renditions of Rhianna's 'Umbrella'. The pupils had spent weeks learning zumba and boc qua moves and incorporated some of these moves into their own dances. It was lovely to have such a big turn out of parents. Thank you so much for those of you who managed to attend. Here are some pictures capturing some of the children's moves.

Girls are penalty queens!

Last week the footballers from Newport took on their Year 5 and 6 counterparts from Hatch Warren in Basingstoke in the Hampshire Cup. In an evenly contested match the girls eventually won 3-2 in a sudden death penalty shoot out after a 1-1 draw. Newport's goal was scored by Joanna Seaman after a good pass from Molly Smith. The girls worked really hard, Billie produced superb saves and saved the vital spot kick, Ellen and Amelia were solid in defence and Meila shone in midfield with a great work rate and moments of real quality when in possession and Joanna was a constant threat up front.
All of the squad played their part in a tough match and were a credit to the school and themselves.

Marvellous mod-roc madness!

On Friday afternoon Year 4 went crazy and created movement sculptures using mod-roc. In previous lessons, they had sketched different movements, chosen their favourite movement and created the base of their sculpture using pipe cleaners. It was the first time Year 4 had used mod-roc and we think they might just have enjoyed the experience! Take a look at the photos and decide for yourselves!

This week the children have been challenged to find out what is the most popular sandwich filling in the year group.

The children worked hard in teams to collect as much data as possible and have now created graphs to show what they have found out.

As for the results, expect requests for cold ham, egg and bacon sandwiches for lunches next week.

Louie saves the day in penalty shoot out

Newport boys started the season with a great first round win in the Hampshire Cup against Oakley this afternoon.

With 8 boys making their first team debuts , the boys played really well and showed great determination and promising teamwork. Callum opened the scoring and then Reece added 2 great goals in the second half and were leading 3-2 in the final minute when a shot ricoched in from a narrow angle into the net to level the scores.
Extra time was a stalemate with the reds "dead on their feet" and holdng on for the final 5 minutes. In a thrilling penalty shoot out Louie saved 3 penalties to cap a fine "man of the match" performance in goal and break our opponents' hearts. Well done boys!

A big thank you to Louie and Brook's mum for transporting so many of the boys.

Year 6 visit to Dapdune Wharf in the glorious sunshine!

Last thursday year 6 visited Dapdune Wharf in Guildford. The trip was influenced by the children's topic 'Row, Row, Row your Boat'. The children enjoyed exploring barges, finding out where the river flows fastest and sketched the winding river. Reptiles Rock!

As part of the English lessons, Year 5 pupils have been learning about reptiles as part of their Creation Stories unit. Berkshire Reptile Rescue kindly came in to show the children some exotic lizards and snakes and they also talked to the children about them. Year 5 pupils got to handle the reptiles (if they chose to!) and as a result of these encounters, they then got to write a creation story of their own based on the Bearded Dragon that they got to see and hold. As you can see from the pictures the reptiles really enjoyed themselves, despite the horrifying experiences with Year 5 children!

Fantastic Filling Research

This week as part of our learning in Maths, year 3 have been challenged to answer the question: What is the most popular filling in year 3? The children have worked in groups to decide what sandwich fillings they were going to research and collect as much data as possible.

Later in the week the children will make graphs to show what they have learnt.

A Taste of Strictly Come Dancing

Some Year 4/5 pupils got a taste of what it must feel like to be a contestant on this popular dancing programme when they attended a Rushmoor schools dance workshop. Led by Marnie Carty, a professional dancer , the children experienced of a wide variety of dances from Latin, ballroom, street, disco and the latest dance sensation, BOKWA.

BOKWA originated in South Africa and is a high energy fitness dance that uses letter/number shapes to help create dance routines. Everyone had a fantastic time, even Mrs Fieldgate managed a few cha cha chas. Many thanks to all the parents/grand parents for dropping off the children extra early so we could travel to St Patricks in Farnborough for the prompt 8:30am start.

Super Sandwich Making

This half term year three have been learning all about healthy eating. This has included learning about the three food groups and what makes a balanced meal.

Last week we designed, planned and made our very own healthy sandwiches using a mixture of different ingredients. We all tasted them and looked at how healthy and tasty they were. All of the children really enjoyed making and, of course, tasting their sandwiches.

Year 4 rugby rampage!

This half term in PE Year 4 are learning how to play tag rugby. So far we have learnt how to put on the tag rugby belts (which produced some very confused faces), we have played games that entail taking each others tags and we have learnt how to hold and pass the rugby ball. Our photos show how successful both classes have been in these activities! Look at the determination and enjoyment on the children's faces!

Year Six spent yesterday at The Connaught School learning about how GPS systems work. They discussed the role that longitude and latitude played in giving us positional information. They then tested their direction skills by using a GPS Tracker to hunt for hidden treasure! In the classroom, they applied their knowledge by interpreting maps and then created detailed maps for the new Year Seven pupils using ICT. Finally, a session playing table tennis ensured we were all exhausted! What a fantastic day - a huge thank you to the staff and young leaders at The Connaught School.

Wild At Wisley

Last week Year 3 visited Wisley Gardens as part of their Sow 'n' Grow topic. We had great fun exploring the many wonderful gardens. We were amazed by the amount of different plants and vegetables.

Newport boys visited Church Crookham for our annual summer football fest.
For many of the boys this was their first opportunity to play football for the school.
Three teams of mixed abilities played 3 teams from CC in a mini league format. Newport A finished joint top with CC2 whilst both Newport B and C finished level with CC1 and CC3 teams.
In the play off Newport unfortunately lost on penalties to CC2.
Newport C were awarded the Turner Trophy for their great performances. Rohil and Jordan stood out with their determined displays and absolutely great goalkeeping from George, who showed fantastic bravery.
There were many star performers in the smart red shirts today. It was great to see. All the boys behaved impeccably and clealry enjoyed themselves. Well done lads!
We'll hopefully arrange another friendly for Autumn term.

Super cup finalists - Year 5 tag rugby sensations

Practice, practice and more practice is the mantra to suceed in everything we do.
Well we hadn't practised for quite a while but all the skills and determination were there as Newport A (playing only their second tag rugby tournament ever), played their way brilliantly into the Cup Final at NEHSSP Summer Tag Rugby tournament yesterday at Heatherside Junior School. This is something we have never done before!

Newport remembered the golden rule of "only run forwards" and stormed through their early games beating Velmead and Newlands before drawing with Hook and then beating a very good Heatherside B team, 3-2 to clinch their semi final place against favourites Heatherside A.

The reds played as if their lives depended on it and snatched victory with a late Jake try to win 5-4! Muddy marvellous.

The final against a very good South Farnborough team was non stop with tries coming thick and fast. The score was 7-7 but SF scored with seconds left to make it 7-8.
A great shame as it was neck and neck all game.
All the players were absolutely marvellous and showed brilliant teamwork with some sublime tries, passing and great defence. All the MaD's agreed that they were magnificent and a great credit to the school.
I'd like to thank all the parents who stayed to support the team and who helped (as usual) to transport all the children there and back. DE

Watery word problems -solved.

Year 5 mathematicians have been hard at work this week solving word problems. Tricky word problems often involve using more than one operation to solve them.Mrs Fieldgate's maths group had to make sure they read the questions very carefully in order to answer some questions based around using water. After an exciting sports week at school we have even more sport arranged this month.

Apart from sports day near the end of term we have entered two teams in the NEHSSP and London Irish tag rugby tournament for year 5 pupils at Heatherside school in Fleet.This is on Friday 8th July, commencing at 2pm.
We have now rearranged the year 4 and 5 boys football tournament with Church Crookham on Friday 15th July. This will start at approximately 3.45pm.
We are in the process of arranging a rounders game against St Michaels for the end of term. We will confirm a date shortly.

Our National Schools' Sports week started off with a great assembly about healthy eating and the olympic values from Mr Munnings. Followed by a surprise visit rom Nicky Bainger, Commercial Manager at Aldershot Town FC; who presented ardent supporter Lewis with a superb Aldershot Town football shirt and an invite into the directors box with friends and family for a home game.

Lewis had written a letter to ATFC recently to ask them to help in our sports week activities.

National schools's sports week got off with a pong this week thanks to table tennis expert and coach officer Derek Seager with his wife Andrea kindly introduced year 5 students to the great game of table tennis.

By simply using the tables in the hall and bats provided by Mr Seager the children had a fantastic time learning new skills and ping ponging.

Indeed at the end Mr Seager presented Ashma with a medal in recognition of her great potential and ability. The children thanked Mr and Mrs Seager at the end for giving up thier time to coach them.

All the children said they would love to play table tennis again.

Year 3 have been learning all about plants and to help us out we have been using our beautiful linkway to learn about the different parts. We have been looking carefully at a range of different flowers and plants to see if we can spot the sepal, anther, petals and filament. Some plants were much trickier than others!

5C Champions!

Newport pupils enjoyed a great day out at Aldershot cricket club's 23rd annual cricket festival. However 5C stole the show and exceeded expectations by winning every match they played!

Led by their captain Reece and some big hitting from Harry, Elise and Mitchell they won through to play their final against Talavera. The players all batted enthusiastically in the final with Elise and Reece catching the eye with some good scores but the best was saved until last when Billie plundered a mind boggling 39 runs off the Talavera bowlers. The Talavera bowlers tried everything but to no avail and the fielders were shell shocked and in disarray with the ball hit everywhere during her phenomenal batting performance.

Talavera could not match the Newport performance and were skittled out for a mere 15 runs

with Harry B taking a great catch and Reece bowling with great accuracy and thought.

Mr Mulvanney commented " Everyone was amazing and we really showed great determination and team work. It was a brilliant day."

Discovering Moore

Artists in Year 5 learnt about the work of sculptor Henry Moore whilst attending an all day workshop hosted by Hawley Primary School. Moore produced over 6000 sculptures during his long career and he used simple flowing lines to produce some amazing art pieces inspired by natural objects around him.

Newport pupils got creative and messy with clay after spending time collecting and sketching in the playground. The variety of sculptures produced was amazing and everyone enjoyed viewing the numerous sculptures produced during the day.

This summer Hatfield House in Hertfordshire (childhood home of Elizabeth I) have an exhibition of Moore's sculptures in the their beautiful gardens. So if you fancy seeing for yourself the scale of some Henry Moore's work this would make a great day out over the summer holidays.

Movie Magic.

Some year 4 pupils got a taste of what it is like to be movie makers during a two day workshop at Wavell School. Their task was to design a movie trailer for a film whose storyline they had created themselves. The groups' movies would have had wide audience appeal as they ranged from science fiction , scary adventure to pirate battles on the high seas.

Working closely with Ms Giblen and her Year 9 & 10 pupils, Year 4 green screened their trailers ready for editing on the same software used in the film industry. Green screening is where a scene is acted out and then the actors are digitally superimposed onto a selected computer background. All the latest blockbuster films such as Harry Potter, Avatar and Pirates of the Caribbean use this technology to very good effect .

Can you guess what background was used in this scene? (Hint: Is that Treasure island ahead?)

The movie trailer images were captured on HD video camera and then the groups laid down their sound track with special effects. Day 2 involved Newport pupils working closely with the older Wavell students to edit the film and soundtracks together to make a professional trailer.

Everyone from staff to students learnt so much from this fantastic collaboration and Year 4 produced some very entertaining trailers. Newport School will be able to watch the premiere of the movie trailers in an assembly later on this month. Steven Speilberg had better watch out as Aldershot has some budding directors, actors and extremely talented film technicians.

A big thank you must go to Mrs Lock and Ms Giblen for organising this great opportunity for primary and secondary pupils to work together in a fun learning environment.

Newport boys secured the Rushmoor Champions League Final with a great 2-0 over a very good St Patrick's team.
The boys were a little rusty and many passes went astray in the first half . The game was a very close affair with St Patrick's showing some good passing moves whilst Newport pressed but failed to create clear cut chances. Rhys showed huge determination to block a shot on goal when St Patrick's had a break on goal whilst the other two Reece's were prominent in midfield and attack.
The second half saw a more determined effort from the boys and Reece created a chance soon after half time for Muhammet to score at the far post in a mad scramble. The boys seemed to gain in composure and began to create more chances. Apart from from one great move from St Patrick's, Harry and Juho kept the opposition at bay giving Richard in goal very little to do. Cameron hammered in a second after a slick and quick move from defence into attack. St Patrick's pressed forward and this allowed Newport a few more chances but they failed to consolidate on the 2-0 scoreline.
The boys have been magnificent this season and the shield is a well deserved trophy to sign off their performances this season.

Year 6 at Shah Jahan Mosque, Woking

A group of Year 6 children had a fantastic experience at Shah Jahan Mosque in Woking.

The trip, which linked to our Community and Belonging topic, was a chance to explore what it means to belong to the Shah Jahan community.

We had the opportunity to learn a great deal from the Imam, Professor and other community members throughout the day, and even had the priviledge of observing an Islamic group prayer.

"I feel sorry for those children who didn't get the chance to be part of such an amazing experience... You couldn't ever learn that through books or the internet: you had to see it first hand to understand how tranquil and spiritual it was," commented Rhiann Vass.

All the pupils who attended were extremely respectful and well behaved and we'd like to thank the community at Shah Jahan Mosque for their wonderful hospitality and kindness.

We had an unforgettable experience!

Osmington Bay

Last week 32 pupils from year five visited Osmington Bay. The children learnt about the coast which is related to our topic 'It's a cliff hanger!' They enjoyed a variety of activities including rock climbing, archery, quad biking and raft building. On the final night the children enjoyed toasting marshmallows around a campfire and shared secrets. On the whole most of the children experienced different activities and overcame some of their fears. Overall it was thoroughly enjoyed by all. I would like to say a big thank you to all of the parents and staff for all of your support and making this trip possible.

Kwik cricket: Newport go close

The paired cricket league began this week with 8 players from year 6 selected to represent the school .

Year 6 played their first competitive league game and lost narrowly by 6 runs in their first game against Beaumont . This was an excellent performance as Newport batted first and kept their composure (which is a distinct disadvantage in this format of cricket) and scored well whilst losing 7 wickets in their 12 overs .Everyone played really well. Matthew nearly had a hat trick when bowling whilst Saad was a revelation in both his batting, bowling and fielding.

Beaumont are experienced cricketers and have a strong reputation at cricket and managed to edge ahead only in the final over . A very promising start to our cricket season.

You can forget Wembley, Farnborough will be the venue to decide the champions of Rushmoor for this season.Newport boys will be playing St Patrick's in our very own Champions League Final next Thursday 26th May.

The kick off is later than usual at 4.15pm and the venue is St Bernadette's, next to Farnborough RFC, as St Patrick's don't have a large pitch.
We welcome back our irrepressible and dynamic captain Reece who sustained a very bad injury in our previous game and hopefully James too..
We're looking for a determined performance and a passing bonanza (just like Barcelona, Man U and Swansea play) to complete a very succesful season . (A subtle hint to Reece W!)

Year Six - Still hard at work!

Even though they have been working very hard over the past few weeks revising for their End of Key Stage Two Tests, Year Six are still focused on their learning this afternoon. After a fantastic diamond cricket match between 6L and 6LE (long time cricket rivals), they settled down wonderfully to research how, when and why children were evacuated during World War Two.

We all know breakfast is the most important meal of the day as it is vital to provide our bodies with fuel for the day ahead. Year 6 have been sitting their KS2 Sats test this week so to get them off to a great start to each day our wonderful cook, Mrs Henchy, has been coming in extra early to provide a tempting, tasty treat of bacon/egg rolls.

The wonderful early summer sunshine enabled pupils and staff to eat alfresco in the garden patio area just off the link way. Enjoying breakfast together was a great way to relax and chat about the day ahead. The year 6 children have shown an excellent attitude and have worked extremely hard in the run up to the SATs as shown by the thickness of their brain book files!

Next week Year 6 are off to enjoy the outdoor activities at Barfield school , so we all have our fingers crossed that the wonderful weather continues. Many thanks to Mrs Henchy for supporting year 6-it is much appreciated.

Boys' Exciting Writing Workshop.

Did you know that watching a great action film can give you lots of ideas on how to improve your writing?Well, that was just what some developing writers in Yr3/4 discovered whilst attending a suspense writing workshop this week with Mrs Fieldgate at Cranford Park Primary school.This special "boys only " event was part of a series of regular events organised by Rushmoor's more able pupil cluster group.

After studying some exciting, nail biting film clips the boys worked collaboratively to devise a toolkit of great techniques to build up tension in their narrative writing. This included the use of pathetic fallacy which in the case of suspense writing means that as something strange/unusual happens , it is mirrored in a dramatic change in atmosphere for example a lovely sunny day suddenly develops into a threatening storm filled sky.

Newport's boys soon put their exciting writing ideas on paper and eagerly shared their writing with their new friends from other local schools. All too soon it was time to return to Newport however I'm sure the boys will soon be sharing their writing skills with their classmates.

Just over a week ago 5C began preparing for their assembly on Robin Hood. As a class, we ensured that we included children's work, a performance of one of the tales and even a persuasive argument to top the performance.

This fantastic tale included power, love and bravery.

Firstly, I would like to thank and congratulate all of the children for learning their lines, including the song. Thank you to all of the parents for supporting your children with this.

Secondly, I would like to thank Mrs Amer, Mrs Amor and Mr Edmunds. Without them I would have struggled to get all of the outfits ready, the power point and the script sorted.

Last Tuesday Year 6 girls travelled to Wayvell to compete in the high 5 tournament. The girls faced a difficult challenge as they had to work twice as hard with less players (a very different match to the normal 7 aside format which they normally play after school).

The girls played admirably and did not give up once. Miss Rockett and Miss Cooke were very pleased to see so much encouragement and support among the team. Even after 2 hours of netball the girls still had smiles on their faces after battling with the glorious weather.

A special thanks go to Miss Lane and Mr and Mrs Graham for taking the children from school, to Wayvell and then dropping children off at their homes. Without them we would not have been able to take part in the tournament. We would also like to thank Mrs Steels for supporting the girls.

Once again, congratulations girls. You fought until the final whistle!

5C’s Circuit Showdown!

Last week parents and pupils gathered in the hall to take part in circuit training, as part of year five's topic on healthy living. Children in 5C designed each of the stations, including hula hoops, jumping jacks and skipping.

Special thanks go out to all the parents who turned up and took part with their sons and daughters. It was so nice to see so many happy faces, even if it was at 9.10 in the morning. Well done!

Y3 Visit to Butser Farm

What a super day we had at Butser Farm. The children were very excited about their trip, and set off bright and early on the coaches.

When we arrived, there was a treat in store. We were taken to see two lambs - just three hours old! We all had to be very quiet, in case we upset them and they didn't form a strong enough attachment to their mother.

Then it was off to the first activities. We started by being Celts. We smashed chalk to make building materials, carved chalk to make our own designs, and then used chalk, soil, water and straw to make a clunch house. We did not try wattle and daub. As that would have involved using cow poo, we felt it was a good thing!

We had lunch in a Celtic roundhouse, sitting on low benches and skins. Although there was a fire in the centre of the room, it was not hugely warm in there.

After lunch, we made a mosaic using real tiles, visited the shop ( always a highlight ) and looked around a reproduction of a roman villa. There were some Roman clothes there, if you need inspiration for our Roman Day.

It was a great day, and the children loved it. What was even nicer, was that at the end of the day, the staff at the centre sought us out to tell us how impressed they were with the children's behaviour. Well done, Year Three

Watch out Matt Groening - Year Six think they are the best animators!

In ICT, Year Six are exploring how cartoons are made using computer aided animation. We used Revelation Natural Art to draw sequences of images - making sure we changed each frame by just a small amount. When we played them quickly, we found we had created cartoons to rival the Simpsons.

Next week we are going to investigate how animators use Stop motion animation to create Wallace and Gromit style films.

How can we investigate how well different materials reflect light?

With a datalogger of course!

This week Year Six used dataloggers to measure the amount of light which was reflected by different materials. We already knew that shiny, light materials make the best reflectors but now we had solid evidence to prove it.

It was a bit tricky setting up the equipment at first but now we know what to do, we would be able to use the dataloggers to help us measure again.

Oh...and as predicted, mirrors do make the best reflectors!

Cross Country Squad

Some people do everything and anything to avoid cross country - but not this lot! Trooping down to Connaught Secondary School at 3.30pm on a cloudy Tuesday afternoon, and with no training, many of them were unsure what to expect.

However, it comes as no surprise that they performed exceptionally well, running to their limits and trying their hardest to get round as quick as possible.

Ryan (Y5) performed exceptionally well coming in a storming 3rd place and congratulations also go to all of the Year 3 pupils who attempted this for the very first time.

If you're reading this and fancy doing some more running, Aldershot running club have superb facilities for children to train at.

Finally, thank you to Mrs Ward and Mr Nicholls for giving up their own time to ensure all of these children had the opportunity to participate.

We had a great time on Science Day! Y3 and Y4 walked down to Belle Vue, then joined Y1 and Y2 for a morning investigating (Y2/3) how to best prepare for an athletic event, and (Y1/4) bubbles.

As you can see, Blessing really got the hang of the jumping activity. We had to see how far we could jump using various starts. In the first picture, you can see him working up to a standing start. In picture two, he's had a short run up (hop, skip and jump distance) but in the 3rd picture, he's really flying, as he has had a long run up.

We also had a visit from a local athlete. Glen Wiseman talked to the children about the preparations he would make before a big athletic meet, the kinds of food that he needed, and the way in which sport made him feel at school.

After his inspirational talk, the children thought about their breakfasts that morning, and just how important it was to a good start to the day.

Heating Materials

Today in Year six we investigated what happened when we heated various materials. We used a sand bath and candle to help us heat egg, chocolate, butter, wax and bread safely. We observed how the materials changed and discussed whether the changes were reversible or irreversible. We discovered that heating egg and bread causes irreversible changes whilst the chocolate, wax and butter melted. We could get these materials back by leaving them to cool.

Penalty shoot out agony in Liphook

The boys played superbly in their QF tie against Liphook and drew 2-2 after extra time but were beaten on penalties 3-1.

The game was a tense and competitive affair with few chances in the first half although Newport hit the cross bar and looked the more threatening of the two teams. Newport deservedly opened the scoring with a spectacular strike from Reece M early in the second half. This was a scorching opener for the reds but a defensive mix up between the defenders and Richard, our goalie, allowed the ball to trickle agonisingly over the line to make it 1-1.

Reece M broke free up the left flank and scored a great goal almost immediately to restore our lead. However Reece, our captain and the clearly the most influential player on the field injured his knee tendons in a tackle and had to go to hospital. This upset the balance of the team and after this our chances were few. With very little time remaining it looked like we would hold on and win the tie but the greens equalised with a stunning long range shot in to the roof of the net.
Despite their best efforts in extra time no team could break the dead lock and the boys were left to finish the tie with a penalty shoot out.
All the MaD's and staff can firmly say that the boys were superb and a great credit to the school . They played as well as they could under the circumstances and gave everything. Had Reece not been so badly injured and had James been available then we might have been be looking forward to the semis.......... who knows? Get well soon Reece.

Watch out! Mad Scientists About!

Wow! Science in Year Six certainly goes with a bang, fizz and even a pop! We are exploring the differences between reversible and irreversible reactions. We mixed solids and liquids together and recorded what happened. When a new substance was created, we knew that an irreversible reaction had occurred. Our favourite was mixing lemon juice and Andrews' salts (you take these when you have a tummy ache.)

Today in maths, Year Six practised telling the time by solving tricky time-loop problems. Working as a team, they had to rearrange cards to match digital and analogue times. It wasn't always easy - sometimes the times were written as minutes to and minutes past the hour.

Top at Talavera!

Newport beat our nearest rivalsTalavera 4-0 to take the Rushmoor 1 league title.
The reds had a full squad as Lewis Lucozade returned to midfield and James was determined to play despite having a viral infection. The boys had to work hard against a very good Talavera team, who were missing their star striker . Chances were few and far between in the inital stages but a slick pass from Rhys to Reece to the other Reece opened up the scores to make it 1-0.

The second half saw a few chances created immediately after the break, before a thumping strike from Reece after a pass from the other Reece made it 2-0 ! Are you keeping up with this?
Anyway, the other Reece chased up his low shot to make it 3-0, after the goalie fumbled the ball. Finally, the other Reece again added his third to make it 4-0.

Matthew nearly made it 5-0 near the end, after a great pass from Reece (the other one). However the boys played really well as a team with Juho again, cool as a cucumber at the back and James again tackling so well.

The boys can feel very proud of their achievements.

They all played really well today.

We now wait to see who wins the Rushmoor 2 league.

All the pupils performed admirably yesterday afternoon in front of their parents.

There had been a lot of practising in the week beforehand where intricate steps and synchronised movements were rehearsed time and again in preparation for the competition. There was good evidence of team work and discussion as the teams prepared for the dancing competition.

In the dance off itself there could only be one winner and Miss Cooke and Mr Edmunds decided that George, Dominic, Caitlin and Lois were the ultimate winners with their well choreographed dance involving a wide selection of intricate steps and Tudor dance moves.

D&T Towers

With the Olympics rapidly approaching, some pupils inYear 5 were set the challenge of constructing a tower on which to mount the Olympic flame. This event was held at St Bernadettes in Cove as part of the Rushmoor's able child challenges. However even Sir Norman Foster, architect of London's famous Gherkin building, would have had to think carefully about this structure because instead of steel , concrete or wood the only construction materials were uncooked spaghetti and a bag of marshmallows!

Working in mixed school teams, the pupils took inspiration from other famous buildings such as the Eiffel Tower , the Parthenon and the Petronas Towers in Malaysia and soon transformed their sketches on paper into a range of towers of varying designs and stability.

James commented "We were judged on tower height, strength and build quality. We also learnt a new word "aesthetics" which is how attractive / good looking a building or object may be". Ryan enjoyed working with different schools, making friends and having fun. Luke noted that team work was vital on such projects -you achieve much more when working and collaborating with others.

All the teams did a marvellous job although some of the towers were a little stronger than others. James' team came a close second to the winning structure.

Perhaps during half term you could take up this challenge yourself. (If you can resist the temptation to eat the marshmallows).

Mayhem at Mayhill

Newport were deservedly beaten 1-3 tonight in the preliminary round of the Standing Cup by Mayhill.
After creating many chances in the first half and only scoring a single goal the boys conceded soon after half time and lost their composure. Midsummer night's dream.

Year five pupils have been thoroughly enjoying their tudor topic work this term. Some pupils have been studying Shakespeare's comedy, Midsummer night's dream, in their guided reading sessions with Mrs Fieldgate. However Shakespeare was an actor/playwright who wanted his work to be seen not just studied, so with that in mind, a booking was made to see Shakespeare4kids production at Camberley theatre.

With Valentine's day fast approaching, this play underlines that the course of true love is a never smooth one especially if the fairy world becomes involved. Mischievious Puck, played by the outstanding Noel Harron, not only cast his spell on Lysander, Demetrius and the unfortunate Nick Bottom but the whole audience. Wonderful songs were interwoven with Shakespeare's script and a good dose of physical comedy/slapstick made for a superb performance.

Year 5 have been raiding the library for more works by one of our greatest playwrights including Twelfth Night and Henry V. Year 6 will not be missing out as they will be starting their Macbeth unit next week which gives plenty of opportunities for Newport pupils to put their acting / writing skills to good use.

Reeling in the years

Boom and bust at Manor

Newport girls played a double header against Grange and Manor this evening.
The girls were clealry rusty in their first game against an unexperienced Grange team despite being refereed brilliantly by a referee who let the game flow........
They eventually managed to score in the second half after a number of scuffed shots and fluffed chances. Despite a lot of huffing and puffing they couldn't add to the single goal to finish as 1-0 victors.

The game against Manor was a much more thrilling affair with an exploding football !
The girls were much more determined against Manor but allowed Manor to take the lead with the softest goal imaginable. As Rachel got stuck in alongside Meila in midfield, they created a few chances and managed to scramble a goal just before half time only for it to be disallowed for an earlier foul on the goalie. A great shame.
However the girls were undeterred and in the second half pushed forward against a tired Manor team. Shannon D had a great shot saved. Despite their best efforts, the girls couldn't snatch an equaliser and lost 0-1.
Our unanimous "man of the match" award went to Emily who had never ever played for the team before! Well done Emily you were absolutely brilliant!

Gremlin Dancing on our Bottoms

Hannah from Gremlin Dance gave a fantastic dance lesson assembly to the pupils today.

As Mr May and Mr Edmunds looked on in dismay, the pupils managed to sway and move their arms to the music to create a dance within ten minutes whilst sitting on their bottoms!

Mayghan from year 5E , already a dance club regular, said it was "Good fun and amazing! Just like dance club on a Friday"

We hope more pupils will be inspired come to our Gremlin Dance club, after school ,every Friday.

Hampton Court

Year 5 had a fabulous day trip to Hampton Court this week.

The feedback was excellent and nearly all the pupils want to return again with their parents. ( Parents:You have been warned!)

Indeed the enthusiasm for history is fantastic and we will continue to study Elizabeth I this term.

All the pupils were assigned to groups and were allowed to explore the palace.

The kitchens were a great success with Robert and Mark entertaining us,whilst Henry's main hall was very popular too, with lots of information to take in.

It was a real shame we could not stay longer.

UNICEF Day For (Climate) Change 2011

We are the world...

Throughout the school today we have been learning how changes to our world's climate is affecting the rights of children around the world and especially in the South American country of Guyana.

In Guyana, the children suffer when annual flooding stops them from attending school, having access to clean water and washes away their homes. Later in the year, the same children suffer through periods of extreme heat when the rivers dry up and water becomes scarce.

In Year Six, the children explored the affects of climate change through mixed-media sculpture. Class 6L made an incredible model of Guyana using only sugar and rice - the main exports of this country. In 6LE, the children created weaving depicting the way in which Guyana's landscape is changed during the flooding and drought seasons.

We have all learnt so much today - we CAN all make a difference. Climate change is everybody's responsibility so:

Two down but two nil!

Newport had to dig deep today to beat a tough St Peters team 2-0 whilst Reece and Lewis were recuperating on Lucozade and grapes at home. What a time to get ill boys!

The boys had to defend really well whilst Reece kept both their defenders occupied up front with his strong play.
A narrow pitch really suited the long St Peters throw ins as they bombarded our goal. Newport, marshalled by Juho in defence and assisted by James kept the yellows at bay whilst Richard, as usual, was confident in claiming all the crosses .

Suddenly, Newport attacked and Reece broke free of their defence to be pulled down as he raced down on goal but no penalty was awarded. The free kick came to nothing.
However minutes later he again raced through the defence to calmly slot home the opener. Almost immediately the reds forced their way up the right with some slick passing and Cameron slotted home to make it 2-0! Great goal .St Peters could hardly believe it!

The second half proved to be a constant wave of yellow attacks . Again, Richard kept calm and stopped and caught everything that came his way. Despite some close shaves, the reds held on, the yellows could not score and the final whistle blew to cap a very determined performance. This was a tough, tough game indeed and the boys had chased everything to earn a win by defending for their lives. Matt and Luke were disappointed not get on today but this was a huge scrap that we had to had to win and we did. We still remain unbeaten in the league. Three wins out of three! Two more games to go.Talavera next.....

The year 5E assembly was disrupted by an unruly pupil who complained about the romantic nonsense the pupils had recited.
Jake, a pupil in the class sat out the class assembly in protest at having to listen to the "romantic tosh" the other pupils were reciting.
He decided to interrupt the assembly after the recital and and proceeded to claim the Highwayman was merely a criminal, a thief and a robber. A murderer even! His words about the beautiful landlord's daughter Bess were equally as harsh, describing her as the awful, lazy, landlord's daughter who had never done a days work in her life, who just sat at her window all day admiring her stolen jewellery.
George (aka Mr Edmunds) asked the audience to consider whether the Highwayman deserved to die and Jake obviously managed to persuade a significant number of pupils that he did.

Shape poems

How proud we were in 3C, when we showed the class the WONDERFUL shape poems that we had done for Homework.
After sharing their own poems with each other at their desks, each table group of children chose one representative to share their poem with the rest of the class. There was a great deal of excitement, because they were such super poems. We have decided that we will make a poem book of our shape poems, in the same way that we have made a class book of our Autumn poems. Maybe the Mums and Dads can look at them when they come in for parent evenings!

Making beautiful music together

Hampshire Music Service has been working with children in Y3 for the last term and a half. Last term, we learned to play the clarinet, this term we are learning how to play the keyboards. The sessions with Mrs Andrews involve a lot of enjoyable activities - as you can see - and we have reached the stage where we can play some simple patterns using several fingers on one hand!

Y3's topic on materials was enjoyed by all as we investigated the property of absorbtion in paper towels. We had at least 5 different types of towels, and found that some were a lot more absorbent than others. Strangely, in 3I, the most absorbent was also the cheapest, whereas in 3C, they found that the most absorbent was also the most expensive!

Why not do this test for yourselves? All you need is a kitchen towel and some water!

Hampshire Cup QF draw

Fresh in are the fixtures for the next round.
Yet again we don't exactly know who we are playing as the teams are playing next week (Feb 3rd.).

It's either LIPHOOK or BISHOP'S WALTHAM.

The deadline to play the QF games is March 3rd.
I'll do my best to arrange a fixture date as soon as I can .

6-2 at Waterloo!

What a result!
Newport certainly raised their game today to beat a very good Purbrook team 6-2.
The entire team played so well with some fantastic passing, tackling and support play.
The boys created a number of opportunities before taking the lead with a Reece M opener. Purbrook created some fine chances that went narrowly wide. However a quick break upfield saw Reece W added a second to make it 2-0 at half time.
Purbrook immediately hit back after half time to make it 2-1 and it looked like it was going to be a long and hard second half. However a fantastic move saw Reece M slide in and score at the far post to make it 3-1 almost immediately. Muhammet came back on and scored a fourth and his first ever goal for the school. Reece added a sublime fifth and sixth to make it 6-1 and take the game away from a stunned Purbrook team. What a captain!
However to their great credit Purbrook still continued to press and scored a neat second to make it 6-2.
The final whistle blew to signal a fine victory for the reds.

Eureka!

Don't panic, we didn't all jump out of our baths today!

No, instead we all shouted 'Eureka' as we enjoyed our Year Six Greek Day!

As well as learning all about the infamous Battle of Marathon (the inspiration for the modern day race), we enjoyed writing Ancient Greek signs, creating Greek theatre masks and our favourite activity...sampling a (fairly) authentic Ancient Greek feast!

With some of us dressed as Spartan soldiers and others as wise Atheneans, the peace was maintained by the appearance of the hero Perseus (Miss Ewing) who was closely followed by the Gorgon Medusa (Mrs Lock!) Don't worry though - she didn't turn that many into stone!

What's in your soil?

Year 3 have been investigating materials and different soils. We carried out an experiment to compare two different soil samples, by looking at the colour, texture and what materials the soil contained.

We discovered that the two soils were very different! One soil was dry and the particles were very big. The other soil was much softer, and contained twigs and even a little ant!

Super Soups!

Year 4 have been busy this week making a healthy vegetable soup. All children had the opportunity to help make the soup which included peeling and cutting all of the vegetables.

Special thanks go to Mrs Carter and Mrs Bryant for spending the whole day as chefs, working with the children and also for ensuring that the soup was ready for the children to take home the same day.

We hope you all enjoyed your soup and that you shared it with some of your family!
