Y5 Trip to Brenscombe

The week before half term 45 Year 5 children went to Brenscombe Outdoor Centre, Corfe Castle, Dorset. Over the week we all did lots of different activities. This was a really end to our unit of work called 'It's a cliffhanger' where we look at different coastlines and learn about how they were formed.

On Monday, we went on a walk over to Corfe Castle.

Tuesday was a day visiting the seaside town of Swanage. We conducted a traffic survey, shop survey, people survey as well as spending time on the beach looking at the features of the beach.

We also worked in groups to create some beach sculptures.

On Wednesday we had a day at the activity centre where there were lots of things to do. We all had a go at abseiling.

Archery

Initiative trials

Rifle shooting
Low Ropes course

Climbing

Teamwork activites

In the evening we had vaiours activities including a talent show and a fashion show.

On Thursday we visited Studland Bay and had two talks from the National Trust about the habitats on the sand dunes and at the coast as well as how the bay area has been formed.

We had a really good time and thankfully the weather was kind to us all week.

The Balaclava Story - 4E Assembly

4E performed a play about a dilemma!

The main character, George, wanted to be part of the Balaclava Boys. They weren't a gang, they didn't have meetings or anything like that, they just went around wearing balaclavas and if you didn't have one, you couldn't go around with them. Well George didn't have a balaclava and his mum wouldn't buy him one because she said "Why would you want a balaclava in the middle of summer?"

George came out of class at school to wash his hands and found a balaclava on the floor, it was Norbert's. He picked it up and tried to fit it in his pocket. It was too big, so he stuffed it down the sleeve of his coat. As soon as he did this, he realised that what he had done was wrong!

When George went home from school he couldn't wait to get rid of the balaclava. He checked the sleeve of his coat, but it wasn't there and thought that maybe he had lost it whilst running home. When George's mum got home from work, she had bought him a present, a balaclava - but he couldn't wear it because everyone would think it was Norbert's.

He went to school the next day and saw Norbert was wearing his balaclava! George asked if he had a new one, Norbert replied "No I never lost it. Some fool had shoved it down the sleeve of my raincoat!"

George faced a dilemma and made the wrong decision - let's hope we all learn from this tale.

Brilliant acting from all in 4E - WELL DONE.

If music be the food of love, play on - we're all starving !!

The Brodowski Quartet.

Year 4 & 5 pupils had the privilege of listening to, and learning about, classical music from around the world - played to them by the Brodowski Quartet.
The quartet comprised 2 violins played by David and Catrin, a viola played by Felix and a cello played by Vanessa.

The children learnt how the stringed instruments could be played in different ways including, bowing, plucking and how the conductor can control the volume and speed of a piece.

All children participated as an audience and some even had the opportunity of conducting - even Mrs Thorndike took centre stage !

This was a great way of introducing some beautiful classical pieces to the children, including the Dance of the Merlitons from the Nutcracker Suite by Tchaikovsky.

Veni, vidi, vici

Year Three finished the Spring term with a Roman Day. They came to school all dressed as Romans following this half term's unit of work....

They saw each others menacing looks and took part in Roman battles. After they conquered it was time for something to eat...
It's hungry work being a Roman!
