Newport's very own Mo Farah's take to the running track!

It was wet! It was very muddy! But the year 5 and 6 cross country runners from Newport Junior School didn't let that stop them!

What better way to spend a Wednesday after school than taking part in a cross country league race! 14 children from years 5 and 6 did the school proud today as they took part in this years first cross country race at Cove Secondary School against 10 other schools.

Having only had a playground to train on, the children were met with two large playing fields to run around and roughly 60 children to compete against. All of them showed great determination, threw themselves into the races and pushed themselves to be the best that they could be. I would like to say a huge well done to all those who took part and a thank you to those who came to cheer them on.

I apologise for some of the blurry pictures below but the children were just too fast for my camera skills!

Look out for more posts about our cross country runs over the next few weeks.

This week, we were set a task to make fairground rides out of K-NEX. This may sound easy but you have to work as a team and connect all the little pieces in order to complete the challenge.

We were separated into groups and each group all had different rides to build for example, a roller coaster, carousel or a pirate ship.We all started off  with small components of K'Nex and had to follow the instructions to put these together to build the ride. By the end of the lesson we were successful in completing the initial stages of the rides and we are looking forward to seeing the end results next week!

Although it was hard work we all had fun and enjoyed working as a group .

The Wonderful World of Year 3 Writing

In Year 3 we have been learning all about the exciting adventures of Alice In Wonderland. We have even written our own sequel to her crazy story to keep in our writing profiles! Here are some of the children publishing their amazing stories.

This week we have been looking at writing a clear set of instructions.  Today we made jam sandwiches that we will be creating again at our Mad Hatter's Tea Party on Thursday 22nd October 2015 from 3:00-3:30.  We hope that you can make it!

4J's amazing class assembly!

Yesterday, 4J sung their hearts out as well as putting on a fantastic show! The school learnt a lot of facts about forests as well as listening to some performance poetry which the children practiced by themselves, even writing their own final verses for 'Night Mail'. Miss Cooke was extremely proud of 4J and all their efforts, well done!

Magnificent Maths in Year 3

In Maths this term we have been learning all about the place value of digits, ordering and rounding numbers, and calculating mentally (+, -). Over the next few weeks we will be reviewing and learning new written methods for addition and subtraction.

Spend sometime over the next few days asking your child to show you their favourite method for addition!

Here's a challenge to try at home:

In this maze there are numbers in each of the cells. You go through adding all the numbers that you pass. You may not go through any cell more than once.

Can you find a way through in which the numbers add to exactly 100?
What is the lowest number you can make going through the maze?

Alice Holt

Last week, year four visited Alice Holt where they were greeted by the forest rangers (Jane and Jackie). They began the day exploring evidence of habitats in the forest inside the classroom. Then they went out into the forest to explore. The children loved going on a mini-beast hunt and identifying what they had caught! They thoroughly enjoyed finding out about the animals living in the forest. One of their favourite facts was that woodpeckers have long tongues that unravel. The spikes on the end of their tongue find the bugs living inside the trees. Then their tongue rolls back up again so that they can eat the food they have caught. Did you also know that moles have a tail that has hairs on the end which allows them to sense where worms are because they cannot see very well? When they catch a worm, their teeth bite into it paralysing the animal. This means they can store food and it stays fresh because the worm is still alive.

Everyone learnt a lot from the day (including the teachers) and we are now really excited to learn more about forests.

Miss Cooke and Ms. Cooper were extremely impressed with the children's behaviour which was impeccable!

Have a look at some of our pictures to show how much fun we had:
