This evening, children from years 5 and 6 (including one child from year 4) took part in our annual hockey tournament at Samuel Cody. Despite the team being extremely new, the children worked really well as a team, improving their skills after every game. Although we lost all of our matches, I was really proud of every team member, especially seeing as some of them have only been playing hockey for a month! Our last match should have been a draw but South Farnborough Junior School scored in the last couple of minutes. My man of the match was Alfie Keeping because he made some incredible saves!

Year 5 Planetarium
On Friday 5th October children in Year 5 were given the opportunity to explore space without having to leave Alderwood School. Children were invited to crawl into an inflatable planetarium and sit and marvel at the wonders of the planets, stars and moon. During their time in the planetarium, children explored why we get day and night and were able to witness the Earth rotating as it orbited the sun. As well as exploring day and night, the children were able to see why we get the four different seasons;: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.
After discussing the Earth's movement in space, the children were encouraged to lay back and look at the beautiful night sky. The light inside the dome was turned down and slowly lots of little stars started to appear around the edges of the planetarium. Children were shown different constellations, including the plough, Orion and Leo. The North Star was pointed out to the children and a discussion was had about how this could be used to aid navigation.
All the children really enjoyed the experience of the planetarium and the knowledge gained by the children was used in a piece of diary writing describing what they would see in the night sky after through a telescope.
The planetarium was a wonderful experience and it was the perfect end to a thoroughly enjoyable space topic.

Chessington World of Adventures
Rollercoaster Rides and Wild Animals!
Year 6 had an incredible day at Chessington World of Adventures. To start the day they completed a forces workshop and learnt all about what forces act on the rollercoaster before going on them. For the rest of the day, children found themselves feeling the force on rides like the Vampire and Dragon's Fury or getting drenched on the Monkey Swings and Tiger Rock.
Whilst at Chessington, the children were also able to see some wild animals, including tigers and penguins! We thought about bringing a tiger back with us but we didn't think Mrs de Sausmarez would be too impressed!
All children were very well behaved throughout the day. I hope they get a good rest over the weekend; I know us teachers certainly will!

Sharing Blodden stories
This afternoon, year 6 shared their Blodden stories with Year 3. The year three's were extremely impressed with the use of adventurous vocabulary and missions that Blodden had to go on. Year 3 thought of some great open ended questions to ask the children which really made the year sixes think. A huge well done to all pupils in year 6 who have worked extremely hard on their stories over the last 3 weeks; they looked amazing!

Year 4 Begins ...
It has been an exciting week in Year 4 this week as our brand new cohort of pupils have settled in brilliantly. It has been great to see all our pupils looking incredibly smart as they have walked into school in the morning!
Already this week, we have begun exploring place value in maths lessons, learning all about the thousands column on the place value chart. English lessons have seen the exploration of Baba Yaga- a Russian folktale which has included acting out the story in small groups.
