Yabba Dabba Doo!

Year 3 have been busy immersing themselves in the Stone Age, including reading Stone Age boy in English and looking at the features of a non-chronological report. In Art, we have been busy using sketch techniques to draw cave painting symbols and then creating our own masterpieces under tables and using sticks to carve shapes into clay. In History, we have been looking at chronology and understanding what prehistoric means. In Science, we have been busy carrying out various experiments, looking at what happens when we mix different substances, seeing if they separate, dissolve etc. Below are just some of the pictures showing all of the fun we have been having!

Next week, we look forward to showing you some pictures from Iron Age Day which we are very much looking forward to!

Eureka!

Starting the term with the Ancient Greeks!

Year 6 have started the spring term by learning all about the Ancient Greeks. So far they have explored the Ancient Greek timeline and discovered that the Olympic Games originated from here. As well as this they have researched the main city states in Ancient Greece,  Athens and Sparta. Both of which were ruled very differently with weak babies being killed in Sparta! As a pair, the children then had to make a decision about which city state they would prefer to live in and why. From this they have started to produce persuasive brochures about their chosen state on Microsoft publisher.

In English, we have been looking at Greek Myths and the characters of heroes and villains. This week the children were able to rewrite a myth from a different characters perspective, including some of them being a sword!

Meanwhile, in art lessons the children have been designing their own mythical beasts that they will, later in the term, create using clay. Take a look at the few pictures below to see some of the designs - Miss Parker's class appeared to have a rhino theme!

We are very much looking forward to Greek Day in a couple of weeks time and getting to try some Greek food. Lets hope the weather is more like it is in Greece by then!

Year 4 become scientists!

This week, Year 4 pupils have transformed into scientists and have begun to investigate the effects of heat on an ice snowman. This introduces them to the idea of changing state, in particular, exploring the concept of melting.

In groups, pupils have been using data loggers to record the temperature of 3 different environments within the school to see how different temperatures affect the rate of melting. Observations were completed every hour with measurements recorded in order to observe change over time.

Pupils will be learning how to produce graphs from the data collected in order to draw valid conclusions.

Mod Roc Sculptures

Take a look at the fantastic Mod-Roc sculptures that Year 4 created last term as part of the topic 'Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes'.

Mod-Roc can be a really tricky (and messy!) material to work with so we are super proud of these sculptures depicting human actions.

Christmas Production

Year 4&5 have been very busy rehearsing their production 'The Little Sheperd'. The show is a modern twist on the classic nativity story. After lots of hard work, the songs are now sounding fantastic and the actions look amazing. We are so excited to share it with you all and hope it gets you ready for the festive season.

Thank you so much for providing costumes and supporting children with learning lines and lyrics. We are looking forward to seeing you on Wednesday and Friday for the sheperd extravaganza! You'd be ba-a-arking mad to miss it!

Ho Ho Ho!

Moving Water in Year 6

Batik Artwork

As part of our topic lessons this half term, the children have been working hard to produce some beautiful batik artwork. After studying the skill of batik and planning a simple design, the children were challenged to produce a piece of work that would show moving water.

I am sure you will agree from the selection of pictures below that they did a fantastic job. The children's batik will be coming home with them next week and they make a great Christmas present!

A Wet Day at the River!

Selborne Rivers Trip

Today, our year 6 children travelled down the road to Selborne to explore the features of a river. The day was split into two activities. For part of the day the children spent their time down at a small and shallow section of river where they were able to measure the depth and speed of the river channel and current as well as discover the wildlife that lives in the water. For the other half of the day the children, climbed a rather steep hill to look out over the land to see how a river changes over the three courses and to explore how settlements have developed around the river.

Although it did rain a little and it was rather chilly, the children had a great time getting to know rivers in a practical nature and where able to extend their classroom knowledge.

Take a look at the pictures below to see what we got up to.
