Year 5 WOW WOW WOW Work!

Hello everyone,

Another week has passed and there are only three more weeks of term left. It has been a week of beautiful weather and we hope you have been able to get outside to enjoy it.

The children attending the key worker provision in school have been working hard as you can see below.

At home, you have also been busy. We have really enjoyed seeing the results of your creativity and hard work. There have been some wonderful art works created using natural resources.

We have also received some fabulous newspaper reports and topic work. Well done and thank you to Anouk, Liam, Chloe, Sebby, Megan, Etrat, Lilith, Dominic and William for sending in their photographs.

This has been our last week of Treasure Island. We hope you have enjoyed the story. We are really looking forward to reading your alternate endings to the story and seeing what else you have been up to. We are getting a little bored of not competing in PE, so this week we will be taking on some local schools at some daily challenges. The senior school PE department would like to invite all families and pupil to get involved from both the junior and senior sites.

Update from the Year 5 Teachers

Hello Year 5,

Just a quick message before the Easter holidays. We hope that you are all well and enjoying the home learning packs and activities that were sent home.

We have all found the past two weeks very strange and are missing seeing you.  Mr Davies spent time in school last week with some Year 5 and 6 children and has said how hard they are working. We have had the same message from some of your parents. It is fabulous to hear!

As well as working, we have been finding ways at home to keep ourselves busy. Mr Davies has been watching lots of old football highlights and has been sending Mr Cahill golf challenges for them both to try!  Mrs McWilliam has been looking after her dog, Frankie, and reading her favourite books and Mrs Paish has been trying out new recipes and spending a lot of time in the garden with her dog, Mac. 

We have been making sure we get some exercise too. How many of you have been doing the same? You might have been playing in the garden, walking with your family or joining in with Joe Wicks during his morning PE lessons. If you haven’t seen them yet, you can find them on his You Tube channel, The Body Coach TV.

Finally, Mrs Hulme had a lovely email from Kerry Gibb, the author who visited school recently. She has written a short story spin-off from her ‘It’s a Kid’s Life’ series and is inviting children to write their own ending. World Book Day Hits Alderwood Juniors

World Book Day Hits Alderwood Juniors!

On Thursday 5th March, we took part in our annual World Book Day celebrations!

The day involved dressing up as one of our favourite characters from a book! Even the teachers got involved and there were so many amazing costumes arriving at school!

We started the day by sharing a story. Across the school, pupils shared their favourite books with somebody else from a different year group. We talked about our favourite books before taking it turns to read to eachother.

 

For the rest of the day, pupils in the school took part in a whole range of activities including costume catwalks, drama explorations, painting in the style of an illustrator and creating our own poems/raps/songs and stories based on a theme from a book.

Global Citizenship Day

Learning About Uganda

 Today, the Junior school took part in our annual Global Citizenship Day where we thought about our role as global citizens and found out about Uganda and some of its art and culture, in comparison to our own. 

Children in Year 3 were introduced to our link school and its location in Uganda. Following this, they created their own Ugandan flag and learnt some African drumming. They also spent some time looking at African artwork and created their own using oil pastels.

In Year 4, children looked at village life before writing postcards to the Child Promotion School to tell them what life is like in Aldershot. They also took part some in African games and created their own African masks using a range of colours and patterns.

During the day year 5, created videos or PowerPoints that showed what a day was like in our school; these will then be sent to our link school. They also learnt some African dance moves before creating their own sequences. To end the day they learnt the language of Luganda and how to communicate at the Child Promotion School.

Year 6 focussed on the landscape and location of Africa, recreating their own maps of Uganda that showed the key features. They spent their morning using their knowledge to create savannah artwork either on paper or on canvases. Finally, the researched the animals that they would see if they went on safari out there and created a fact file about them.

The children also came in wearing mufti with the colours of the Ugandan flag: black, red, yellow and white. We managed to raise £306.80 and this will go towards by educational resources for our link school in Uganda. Thank you for supporting this cause.

Children in Need

A Fantastic Fundraising Event!

Once again the whole of the junior school have done us proud this week with their participation in fundraising activities for Children in Need.

Events started yesterday with the year 4 adult raffle where some incredible prizes could be won. Following this, a year 5 and 6 Movie Night was held in the school hall. This had an amazing turn out and proved to be quite popular. All the children had a great time watching Monster Family and eating popcorn.

Today, the fundraising continued with our Pudsey Sale in the school hall. All children were able to come and buy cakes from the year 5 bake sale, have a go on the year four raffle, vote for their favourite year 5 show stopper cake, guess how many sweets/lego/chocolates were in the jar, vote for the year 3 teachers to have their faces painted and buy their own Pudsey merchandise. There was a great atmosphere in the hall throughout the morning and it was fantastic to see all the children getting involved. 

Back in their classrooms, all the children spent the day completing Children in Need themed activities including, dotty artwork, raps, talented shows and year 5 even completed a sponsored silence!

At the end of the day, the whole school gathered in the school hall for the Big Reveal Assembly, where the total that each class and year group had raised was revealed. I am extremely pleased to say that thanks to all your donations the junior site managed to raise a massive total of £2435.40 for the cause. There is also a healthy donation coming in from the infant site who have also been fundraising for Children in Need today. A big thank you to all of you for supporting this cause and making the day a huge success!
