A Cold and Muddy Cross Country Race

Running All the Way!

Yesterday, after school, four members of year 5 took on a rather muddy and cold cross country race. Arriving at Wavell School, the children were greeted by a typically freezing British day but this did not put the children off. After a quick warm up and discussion of the route the three boys, who were representing our school took to the course, pacing themselves well. With some stiff competition, all the boys finished in fantastic places and showed great determination when running the whole track. 

Next up was the girls, both of which again showed amazing perseverance and although the weather proved a challenge the fairly flat route was on their side and they manged to finish the race in no time. 

Well done to Ella Bento, Chloe Purvis, Taio Odmire, Alfie Ralls and Ellis Wells. I am already looking forward to the next race in March!

Year 6 Paired Cricket

A huge well done to the Year 6 paired cricket team: Riley Nuttell, Ollie Lewis-Gorton; Nathan Newell; Robson Shurlock; Samuel Cooper; Ben Munro; Jessica Cainey and Sasha Drew. The team have been playing in Aldershot Cricket Club's annual paired cricket tournament this half term.


As the tournament progressed, the year 6 boys and girls have really begun to gel as a team. This has been noted by teachers from other schools and the cricket club's coaches. They have also been complimented on the huge improvement in their bowling throughout the tournament.


Out of the five games played, the team gained four positive scores and one win, last week, against Talavera Junior School.


A huge well done for a fantastic effort and good luck in your next tournament on Friday.

London Philharmonic Orchestra Trip

London Philharmonic Orchestra rock the stage!

This week Alderwood School Choir hopped on a train to London for a fun-filled afternoon of classical music. The choir ventured to the Royal Festival Hall where they sang with and listened to the fabulous London Philharmonic Orchestra.  Well known songs by composers such as Bach and Bernstein rang through the concert hall as children from across the South East gazed on in amazement. The experience was truly exhilarating and inspiring.

Newport Junior School Choir Community Performance

On Saturday Newport Junior School Choir were out in the community bringing Christmas cheer to the people of Aldershot. The choir performed a festive selection of Christmas songs at the community event located around the bandstand in Aldershot town. They were surrounded by people merrily purchasing items from the German style market and children slipping and sliding on the skating rink. Their angelic voices warmed the hearts of those partaking in the festive event and their professionalism was commented on by many of the on-lookers. Well done!

Choir of Angels

On Saturday 19th November, the newly formed Newport Junior School Choir performed a selection of Christmas carols for the Aldershot Christmas light turn on event. The children sounded like angels and were very proud to represent their school.

Girls Football V Wellington

On Thursday afternoon, the girls football team competed in their first league fixture against Wellington. For some of the girls it was the first opportunity to play in a football match and the experience will benefit them in future matches. After warming up, the game started and we found ourselves going behind to an early goal.

The girls battled hard and created chances to score a goal themselves. Unfortunately, just before half time Wellington scored a second goal. After a quick team talk and much needed drink the girls managed to pull a goal back, thanks to Rhea's goal. 2-1. The girls battled hard for a second goal but they couldn't quite manage it. In the dying seconds of the game, Wellington scored a third goal. The final whistle followed soon after, signalling a 3-1 defeat.

After the game the girls were happy with their performance and are looking forward to the next fixture against Newlands.

A Celebration of Sporting Performance

This afternoon, all children of Newport Junior School gathered in the hall to celebrate this years outstanding sporting performances. 

To start with, the children reflected on the year and looked back at some of the competitions Newport had taken part in throughout the year. Following this year group sports awards were given out to those children who the teachers thought had shown Olympic and Paralympic values throughout the year. Each of these children received a certificate and medal to celebrate their sporting achievements.

Unfortunately, at the end of the assembly we did have to say farewell to Mr Garner, who, after two years, will be leaving us to take on a managerial role at Premier Sports. However he will still be popping into the school from time to time. In September we will have a new sports coach who we look forward to meeting.

Team Poland take on the Euros!

Poland's Shocking Defeat to England! 

Today after school, nine boys from across years three and four took part in a European Football Tournament after school at Samuel Cody. After been drawn as Poland, the team was entered into Group B for the group stage alongside Germany, Northern Ireland, Wales, Ukraine and England (who managed to win against us!).

Across the tournament the team played 5 matches during which all the boys were able to show off their outstanding football talents. From the powerful kicks and accurate aims of Kalen Kelly to the incredible saves from Alfie Ralls! All the boys who took part in the tournament put in 100% effort and showed great sportsmanship from the sidelines by cheering each other on.

Even though it doesn't look like we have made it past the group stage, we definitely have some talented footballers ready to join our upper school team over the next couple of years.

Well done to all the boys who took part and thank you to the parents from coming along to watch!

Newport's Girls Football Team Take to the Pitch!

Although Newport does not currently have an official Girl's Football Team, several members of year 5 and 6 teamed up after school today to take part in a football match against All Saints. This game represented the first round of the standing cup and even though all of the team tried their best, we did suffer a defeat.

However all girls who took part in the game should be extremely proud of themselves as they had not played as a team before and in the 40 minutes that they were on the pitch they all made massive improvements in their football techniques and skills. 

A special mention should go to our Woman of the Match, Rhea Larner, who took two fast balls to the face but was still determined to get stuck into the game and try her best.

I would like to say a huge well done to all those who took part and thank you to the parents who braved the cold and came along to support the team. 

100% Effort from Newport's Football Team

Newport's Footballers Show Great Promise!

After school today, Newport's footballers took on a strong St Joseph's side. Even though our team was out numbered by height, the boys all put in 100% effort and stayed strong until the very end. Unfortunately, the boys did suffer another defeat but showed tremendous football skills throughout the game. As the majority of our team is made up of year 5 boys they are showing excellent promise for next year! 

A special mention should go to Connor Wotton who showed another spectacular goal keeping performance, making some terrific saves throughout the game (hopefully he will give Chelsea a few tips!). During the game, especially the second half, a number of the boys showed some solid performances and weren't afraid to get stuck into the game this includes Charlie Lieberman, Ollie Lewis-Gorton and Ben Munro.

A Day Out At The Football!

Newport Take Over Aldershot FC's Football Ground!

What better way to spend a Saturday than at a football game? Today some of the year 5 and 6 boys from our football team braved the cold weather to compete against St Michael's school at half time of the Aldershot vs Wrexham game.

As well as watching the football game, 8 of our football players got to take to the pitch to show of their football skills. Starting off at the centre spot, the boys had to run with the ball down to the goal and try and score before their opponent. Although the boys didn't manage to score they still really enjoyed having the opportunity to play on the pitch and watch their home football team play (even if Aldershot did lose!). It was a fantastic day out and a great experience for the team.
