Where's Wall-e?

Fans of the Pixar movie Wall-E might notice that some of the fantastic robots created during a collaborative workshop with Wavell school bore more than a passing resemblence to the sci fi star . Year 6 pupils were given the task of creating, from scratch, a Lego mindstorms robot that would be able to complete a range of challenging tasks. The morning was spend assembling and equipping the robots with a range of sensors: touch, light and sound activated. The individual robots, after being named, were them programmed to complete a set of tough tasks:navigating through a zig zag maze, dancing in a circle, pacing round the perimeter of a square and last but not least competing in the Usain Bolt robot race (15m flat race). Assisted by Year 8 pupils from Wavell, all the children enjoyed the practise sessions however the real event, watched by the whole year group, was an exciting and thrilling climax to a wonderful day. Tangled robots waltzing together mid race proved a nail biting yet hilarious finish to two of the three races. Purple team (Kai,Zac Molly and Courtney) just clinching the robot race prize.Red Team put up a stirling fight to finish second and were awarded a prize for the best team work throughout the day. Well done Logan, Scott, Sian and Finn!
Many thanks to Mrs Giblen and her Year 8 helpers for assisting in this memorable day.

Butser Farm!

This year as part of our Roman topic the year 3s went on a trip to Butser Farm.

We learnt about how the Romans invaded Britain and took over from the Celtic way of life. We looked at the differences in how the Celts & Romans lived and had a go at some Celtic & Roman activities!

We sat inside one of the Celtic roundhouses. They had a fire in the centre which was quite smoky, but it kept us nice and warm!

This was a recreation of a Roman villa. The villas were much more like the houses that we see nowadays. As you can see on the floor, the Romans used attractive mosaics to decorate.

We took part in chalk crushing while we were at Butser. It was quite hard work as we had to 'crush' the chalk using hammers that were made out of bits of tree! The chalk is then collected and used for building materials.

Luckily, the rain stayed away and the sun managed to come out a points - although it was still pretty chilly!! We enjoyed our trip and have learnt much more about the Celts & Romans!

Budget busters win building prize!

This week Year 6 pupils proved that they were up for a challenge- a construction one! Competing against schools from all over Surrey and Hampshire, Newport pupils had to accurately construct and build a complex building. Costings and time management played an important part in this task however super team work and effective, clear communication between all team members was the key to success. The pictures below showed the fantastic effort put in by the Newport team.

Judging was done by Chris Horsfield, from Construction Partnership in Southampton. After presenting their building and discussing the highs and lows of the event, Newport were delighted to discover that they had been awarded the prize for the most cost effective design. As the team found out from Chris, this is an important factor in contracts being awarded in the construction industry. The children also talked about their career aspirations to Chris and he was able to give them an interesting insight into this industry that impacts on so many aspects of  our lives.
Many congratulations to the Newport team: Finn, Rupesh, Markus, Courtney, Lucy and not forgetting our architect of the future, Katie.

Greece is the word .....

On Tuesday, 6C performed their first and last class assembly of the year at Newport and did not disappoint! From Homer to Grease and Zeus to the Trojans, each child played their part brilliantly. Miss Cooke was very impressed that they learnt their lines really quickly and we are all now looking forward to the summer performance. Thank you to all of the parents for digging out their Greek outfits again.

Hockey League Round 2

On Thursday a mixture of boys and girls from years 5 and 6 went to Aldershot and Farnham Hockey Club. This was the second round of our three part tournament. We played 4 matches and ended up winning 3 out of the 4 games, which is our best result to date! All of the children were impeccably behaved as always and Miss Cooke was really proud of all of their efforts. A big thank you to the parents, especially Angela who ended up taking half of the team. Below are our results:

Newport v Talavera 1 - 2

Newport v St Bernadette's 3 - 1

Newport v South Farnborough 4 - 1

Newport v Manor 1 - 0

Apologies to Cassandra who missed our photo yesterday. If you come and see me on Monday, then I will take a picture of you on Monday.

Egyptian Day

On Thursday, Year Four travelled back in time to the days of ancient Egypt. Everybody looked amazing and made a huge effort with their costumes, from mummies to Tutankhamun and other famous pharaohs.

The children participated in a fantastic drama workshop, learning about the many vital uses of the river Nile, the discovery of King Tut's tomb and the social hierarchy of ancient Egypt. Back in the classroom, we learnt about pointillism and created our very own ancient Egyptian inspired artwork.

Please look at our photos from what has been a great day!
