The Olympics Comes to Newport!
Today marked the start of Newport's Sports Week 2016. All children began the day by arriving at the opening ceremony led by their class flag bearer. Once in the hall children were introduced to the theme of the week, 'Road to Rio', and told what activities they would be completing this week, including a class pentathlon! Following this, the English National Anthem was sung with pride by the whole school and then 5 students took to the stage to complete a spectacular Olympic Ring Hoop performance. No ceremony would be complete without an Olympic Torch so to end the celebrations our torch was carried into the hall by Mrs Brock to signal the start of our Sports Week.
All children then went back to their classes where they began to take part in a range of sports themed activities, from cotton bud javelin throwing in year 4 to paper plate discus throwing in year 3. While the rest of the year groups were taking part in Olympic themed maths and English lessons, year 5 were dancing their way to Rio, learning Brazilian dance moves and turning Olympic sporting events into dance movements. However, I think the year 3's had the most fun today, when they took on their class teacher in a penalty shoot out to see how many goals they could score against them in 20 minutes and 16 seconds! The rest of the year groups have this to look forward to later this week.
All of the sporting activities the children have taken part in today count towards their classes Road to Rio distance challenge so don't forget to make sure they log their activity on the Get Set website or record this on their sheet. If you haven't already signed your child up to the Get Set website then don't worry as you can sign them up at any point this week, ready to see which class have traveled the furthest to Rio in Friday's closing ceremony.
Make sure you keep checking the blog this week to find out what else we get up to during our sports week.
